Chapter Ten

Hallie had dealt with a lot of slams of adrenaline over the past forty-eight hours, but this one was the worst. Because losing David would be harder than going through another attack.

“She can’t take him,” Hallie managed to say. Her voice was weak. Spineless. It disgusted her so she did something about that. She let the fresh adrenaline fuel her determination. “CPS won’t take him,” she amended.

“No, they won’t,” Nick agreed. “I’ll handle this.”

Since Nick had a badge, it would be easy for Hallie to hand over that duty to him, but David was her child. And she needed to do this herself.

“Could you please watch David for me?” Hallie asked Rosa.

“Of course,” the woman quickly agreed. She went and took David from Hallie’s arms. “Ms. Lowe is in her car that’s parked in front of the house, but if you tell the hands who are keeping an eye on her, they’ll escort her in.”

Hallie didn’t especially want the social worker in the house, but she couldn’t risk carrying on a conversation with her outside. Not with that second “person of interest” still at large. With all the security, it would be hard for that person to sneak onto the grounds, but it wasn’t impossible. The person could go into sniper mode and try to take shots at them.

While she walked to the front of the house—with Nick right beside her—Hallie tamped down her fear over losing her child and considered how best to approach this. If she emphasized there’d been an attack just the night before, Ms. Lowe might consider it proof that David needed to be removed.

Of course, it was highly likely that the social worker was already aware of what was going on or she wouldn’t have come here. So, Hallie would just need to convince her that taking David wouldn’t be in the best interest of the child. And it wasn’t. Hallie believed that because no one would lay down their lives to protect David as Nick and she would do. Cullen and Leigh as well.

Nick made it to the front door ahead of her, but instead of opening it, he made a call. To Child Protective Services, she realized. And he verified that they had indeed sent out a Ms. Lowe to the ranch. He then asked for a photo of the woman. A precaution that Hallie was very glad he was taking. When the photo loaded on his screen, he peered out the window to the woman who was pacing by a black car.

“It’s her,” Nick said, verifying the woman’s identity.

He ended the call with CPS and disarmed the security system so he could open the door and motion to the hands to let the woman in. Ms. Lowe wore a simple beige skirt and white top, and she had her dark auburn hair pulled up. She was tall, willowy thin. And clearly riled. Probably because the hands had “detained” her.

“I’m guessing you think it’s necessary to have these armed men stand guard over someone with CPS credentials?” the woman snarled, aiming that complaint at Hallie.
